Service to others is important for happiness because it affects how we see ourselves. When we focus on our shortcomings and failures, we easily view ourselves as "bad" or "wicked" people. That mindset creates a standard which our behavior follows: we expect toxic behavior, so we act according to that expectation with little protest, even if, deep down, that behavior makes us feel awful. Actively engaging in service for others can make us feel better. Sometimes, when I feel gloomy, I try to help others, whether by sending a nice note or text or by making an actual gift, because I feel better afterwards.
A month ago, my friends and I were stargazing when I mentioned the idea for us to shave our heads. One friend agreed to it, and we were able to donate our hair to Wigs for Kids, a non-profit that makes wigs for children with cancer. It was a nice memory, and it made me feel good about myself.
Serving others is how we serve ourselves. The more service we do, the kinder we feel and the kinder we can be. The pandemic has greatly influenced the number of available service opportunities in the community. What are some acts of service you have done in the past? What about now? Please remember that I love you always and everything is precious :)
